I flicked the light on, but the deer didn’t flinch.
With 100 acres of woods in our backyard, we see deer almost daily. My wife holds the record seeing seventeen at one time. Oftentimes the first thing I do upon waking or arriving home from somewhere is to see if we have the backyard visitors. Even at night we see them. At those times you can barely see their shadows so sometimes we’ll flick on our floodlights to get a better look. Unlike a deer in the headlights, many times they don’t even look up! They just keep eating or meandering through the yard. It’s odd! You’d think they would run off in fear.
Hunters know that deer react to light in different ways. In the dimness of late afternoon deer will begin to drift into the open fields. And at the brightness of dawn they melt away to their daytime hideouts. They respond to the light based upon where they are, how safe they feel, and the time of day.
The Bible talks about how people react diffeently to the Light; not the light from a floodlight or car, but the light of God’s truth. John said that Jesus is the, “light of the world that gives light to every person coming into the world.” People react differently to God’s light, just like deer do to our lights.
When confronted with Jesus some people are drawn to Him. Some are surprised, like the deer in the headlights, and wonder which way to run. Some ignore him. But all are exposed to some truth about God and his Son, even if it’s only the “light” of the creation around them.
How have you responded to this Light? Are you trying to live in the Light? Are you oblivious to Him? Are you ignoring it? Are you running away from the Light? Or perhaps, you’ve been surprised by Him!!
Whatever your situation; Jesus is the Light of the World. What will your reaction to Him be?
John 1:7 This man came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all through him might believe. 8 He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light. 9 That was the true Light which gives light to every man coming into the world.
